Summer Harvest

August

The final chapter of summer

I think we can all agree that August signifies that summer is nearing its end.

For country folk, it conjures up idyllic scenes of farmers hard at work in the fields - harvesting crops, turning straw, and baling up grass, all in preparation for the winter that lies ahead.

August is a month to celebrate the summer, to remember good times spent in the sunshine. To look back on the year so far and reflect.

A month to enjoy the last days of summer.

It’s a month of change - a time when we shift from one season to another, from one state of mind and being to another. In the farming calendar, it's the time to harvest the fruits of labour from the hot summer that has passed by too quickly. A time to preserve and to take stock.

As we say goodbye to summer, we can’t help but look ahead and wonder what the coming winter will bring.

For me, this always brings a sense of excitement - Autumn is one of my favourite seasons. I get excited to start wearing jeans and leather boots again!

We see spent flower heads turning into berries. Corn and wheat fields become golden seas, swaying in the breeze. And buzzy bees are still hard at work, making the most of every last bit of nectar as winter draws near.

The inspiration behind Summer Harvest

The Summer Harvest pattern was inspired by the memory of summer - dried flowers in the hedgerow still standing well into the winter months.

It’s a celebration of the height of summer, followed by its quiet passing and the soft transition into another season.

There’s something to be said about remembering what has gone before, about looking back at what has passed. For some, that can be painful - remembering lost loved ones or not wanting to revisit past hurt.

But Summer Harvest represents looking back and remembering the good - remembering blessings and joy.

Remembering the good

There is a verse in Psalm 77 that says, “I will remember the works of the Lord.”

This is about looking back and remembering the good things the Lord has done. I can testify to His good works in my own life.

When we remember the good, it gives us courage for the future.

I can look back and see how the Lord has helped me before - and that encourages me and increases my faith in Him as I walk into the unknown.

For some of us, the future can feel scary. We can never know exactly what lies ahead - but by looking back on the good, the fond memories we hold close to our hearts, we find strength.

It gives us hope. It gives us joy. It keeps us going.

Just like the memories of warm summer days keep us going through the dark, cold days of winter.

There is joy and strength to be found in looking back on the good.

With love,
