Autumn Lace

Hello October

October is the month where we become fully submerged in autumn.

The leaves have changed colour and begun to fall – some trees are already bare. The weather is unpredictable; within the same month we can experience bad storms and, in contrast, glorious sunny dry days.

My favourite kind of autumnal day is cold and dry, with the sun shining down from a gorgeous blue sky; rich yellow and rust-coloured leaves swaying in a gentle breeze.

October can still be surprisingly warm. It’s not until November when we start to get colder weather – especially here in Cornwall. In many parts of the UK, I know winter can arrive far earlier.

Having a warmer climate in Cornwall means we never get proper winters with snow, which, the child in me gets very disappointed by.

But before winter arrives, we get to enjoy the beauty of autumn. Golden leaves, burnt-orange tones, red berries on branches, a few blackberries hanging on for the wild birds and silhouettes of bare trees against deep orange sunsets.

Autumn is something to savour – something to indulge in before the bleakness of winter hits us.

What is Autumn Lace?

The pattern Autumn Lace represents this time in the year when it feels like, just for a moment, everything is golden. It is the calm before the storm, a time of peace and serenity before winter presses in. It feels so fleeting and it always seems to pass by so quickly.

It’s a season where everything around us feels rich and indulgent: earthy tones, misty mornings, harvests of pumpkins and squashes. Even sloe gin making in preparation for Christmas.

Depending on where you are in Britain, you might hear red deer rutting or see migrating birds passing overhead.

Enjoying the simple pleasure of returning home to homemade soup with a warm, crusty bread roll after being outside in the cold.

Autumn is also a time for having a tidy up in the garden or clearing out the greenhouse.

Dog walks in wellington boots and wax jackets, collecting conkers and chestnuts, trying not to get spiked by their prickly shells.

Chopping logs and stacking them neatly in the woodshed, ready for cosy evenings in by the fire.

All these things speak of happiness, enjoyment, beauty and utter gloriousness.

Every season has its glory.

Glimpses of glory

I see a glimpse of God’s glory in all of this. In nature especially, I see such splendour, such magnificence.

We can see God through His creation: His strength, His genius, His wisdom, His infinite beauty.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

Psalm 19:1

He is visible to us in what He has created.

“But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.”

Numbers 14:21

The Lord surrounds us with His glory.

This fills me with awe for the greatness of God but at the same time, fills me with comfort. It makes me feel loved, cared for and protected. He is never far away.

This is His promise – to always be with us:

“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”

John 14:18

Autumn Lace is to be seen as a reminder of God’s presence. It’s like looking through a golden veil. When we look with faith, we will see His glory in creation.

Making the most of October

This year, I plan to make the most of autumn.

I am purposefully scheduling time into my diary to get out with the camera and capture some glorious seasonal scenes: photos I can use and draw inspiration from throughout the dark winter months to create future designs.

Let’s make the most of October together.

Let’s savour every moment of glory we see.

Enjoy those golden moments, before we turn the corner into winter.

With love,

Megan x
