The story behind the Rose
Hello there ~ I'm Megan.
I’m so happy you’re here.
Welcome to Notes from the Hedgerow, a space where I share my creative journey, love of nature, and the heart behind my work.
If you've had a read of my story already, you’ll know that my faith plays a huge part in my life. My desire is that this blog will be a place where beauty and hope come together to inspire you and leave you feeling blessed.
Rooted in nature, drawn to beauty
I’ve always been deeply moved by the natural world - from the tiniest flower in my garden to the winding river I pass on my dog walks. Creation stirs something within me. It’s where I find peace, joy, and a sense of God’s love.
A few years ago, I found a creative outlet in watercolour painting. It became more than just a hobby, it became a way of admiring nature - full of beauty and significance.
I never just wanted to paint something “pretty.” I’ve always wanted to capture the feeling of wonder that I get from looking upon creation - that sense that there’s more going on than what just meets the eye.
A deeper purpose
When people see my designs, I hope they feel what I feel: a moment of stillness, a quiet joy, and somehow a sense that they are loved.
This deeper purpose is woven into every part of my work - even my logo.
The Rose
You might have noticed the rose tucked between my names in the logo. I chose it not just because roses are beautiful (an absolute classic of the English garden), but because they carry personal meaning for me.
My maiden name is Thorn, and even though I now go by Haigh (pronounced "Hayg") - after my wonderful husband - I’ll always be a Thorn at heart.
The rose, with its delicate petals and sharp thorns, seemed like the perfect symbol to represent me: gentle but sharp, blossomed and redeemed.
Curious to know if the rose held any symbolism in the Bible, I did a bit of digging - and what I found surprised me.
“In the Bible the rose, as a symbol, reflects God's creativity and the beauty of His creation.”
- Biblehub.com
“The rose's beauty and fragrance are seen as reflections of God's glory... Blooming is likened to the flourishing of the soul in the presence of love and grace.”
- Biblestudytools.com
“The rose’s thorns are sometimes interpreted as a symbol of trials and suffering... Reminding believers of the crown of thorns worn by Christ.”
- Biblehub.com
There’s a passage in the book of Isaiah that speaks of the desert blooming like a rose - a poetic picture of hope and renewal. Whether or not you connect with those words in a spiritual way, the message is universal: things can be restored. Beauty can return. Life can flourish, even after struggle.
This is a testament of my own life. Over the past year I feel I have flourished after a time of trial and sadness; the Lord has redeemed my life and restored my joy.
Beauty with a story
My aim from the start was to create beauty that tells a story. Pieces that you can bring into your home, not just for how they look, but for how they make you feel.
This blog is a space where I’ll be sharing these stories - from inspiration I find in the hedgerows to the meanings behind my designs. Whether you're here for the products or just a quiet moment of reflection, I hope that you’ll find something that speaks to you.
Thanks for stopping by
I’m truly glad you’re here.
With love,
Megan x
